The waste industry is entering a new digital era. From 1 October 2026, operators of waste receiving sites across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be required to use the new Digital Waste Tracking System (DWTS) to record waste movements, with Scotland expected to follow in January 2027.
The introduction of DWTS has established ‘now is the time’ for waste operators to review their processes and invest in technology that supports compliance, improves efficiencies, reduces driver time onsite and delivers an improved service for customers.
The move to digital waste tracking is part of a UK-wide initiative to modernise waste record-keeping, improve transparency, and help tackle waste crime. By replacing traditional paper-based processes with a single digital system, regulators aim to make waste movements easier to monitor while reducing opportunities for illegal activity.
